A: They measure different things and they are declared to different standards. A smoke alarm detects combustion particles and is declared to EN 14604; a CO alarm detects carbon monoxide, a gas produced by incomplete combustion that has no smell, colour or taste, and it is declared to EN 50291-1 for household use.
